Abstract:

The study of the building up of chemical elements in the Galaxy is plagued by numerous free parameters, some of them related to the production, mixing and mass loss of stars on the Asymptotic Giant Branch, resulting in enrichment of the Galaxy gas of several heavy elements from these stars, their so-called yields.

The high accuracy now obtainable in estimating abundances and ages of solar-type stars has, however, opened up the possibility to constrain the yields of AGB stars semi-empirically.  This possibility will be exemplified by a study of the key element carbon.
