Abstract:

Thanks to high precision photometric data from space missions, our understanding of stellar granulation has improved, since these observations have shown in great detail the stochastic brightness fluctuations of stars across the HR diagram.  These fluctuations need to be quantified to detect and characterize exoplanets.  In this talk, I will present new scaling relations between granulation properties, such as the brightness fluctuation and characteristic timescale, with stellar parameters.  Such relations were obtained by using long time series of 3D stellar atmosphere models at different metallicities and across the HR diagram, generated with the STAGGER-code.  Additionally, I will show our current work in the understanding of how stellar granulation affects the detection of exoplanets, and how synthetic generated light curves using hydrodynamical 3D models can help.
