Description
Long-term stability is crucial for circular accelerator and these machines must be designed and operated in such a way that instabilities caused by resonances are avoided. Many resonances occur due to nonlinear effects that could arise from imperfections, beam-beam effects or due to nonlinear elements in the design. Hamiltonians provide the natural formalism for studying such dynamics. In this talk I will give an introduction to some tools of Hamiltonians, Lie Algebra and Normal Forms and in particular I will show how this framework can be applied to tune-shift compensation.
