The SND is a new detector developed in the context of the SHiP experiment in the future beam-dump facility (BDF). The detector is designed to identify all three neutrino species and to measure their energy in an unprecedented
energy range. It also allows for searches for light dark matter through the observation of its scattering off the detector atoms. While the BDF project is under consideration at CERN, we propose to build and operate the SND prototype during the Run3 of the LHC. The TI18 underground tunnel has been identified as a unique site to perform this measurement, due to the very low environmental and machine-induced backgrounds. The SND prototype will be placed off-axis and the neutrinos will mostly come from hadrons with charm-quark content. The proposed experiment will thus make the first ever measurements of the charm-quark production in a very forward angular range that is not accessible by any current LHC detector. The detector will be a hybrid, combining nuclear emulsion technology and electronic detectors, and the sub-micrometric accuracy will enable pictures of unprecedented resolution to be taken of neutrinos and dark matter candidates. In this seminar I will discuss the details of the proposal, and the physics reach with the data collected in Run 3 and beyond.
