Description
Present-generation neutrino telescopes are also very suitable for searches for exotic particles due to their large volume. The existence of magnetic monopoles, stable particles carrying one magnetic charge, is motivated by various theories which extend the Standard Model of particles. This talk covers searches for magnetic monopoles carried out with the IceCube detector. When monopoles pass through IceCube, they produce light via different mechanisms dependent on their velocity. In particular Cherenkov light and luminescence of ice will be discussed in this talk. The light pattern is then recorded by IceCube and analyzed to identify particles.
