Uppsala

Uppsala is a small and beautiful student town. It is one of Sweden's famous tourist sights with the historic university buildings, the Gothic cathedral and the old castle all situated within a few minutes walk from the town centre. The botanical gardens and the ancient Gamla Uppsala site add to Uppsala's pleasant atmosphere.

Museum Gustavianum: The oldest university building, named after the then King Gustav II Adolf. It is crowned with the second oldest Anatomical Theater in the world. The center piece of this university museum is the Augsburg Art Cabinet. In addition there are artifacts from the Viking period, ancient research instruments from Uppsala University and a small archeological collection from Egypt.

University Main Building: Or Universitetshuset in Swedish. Build in 1887 behind the Gustavianum. It contains the main auditorium and lecture halls and is used for the annual PhD award ceremony.

Uppsala Cathedral: Dating from the 13th century, build in brick stones, and at 118m height the talles church in Scandinavia. Its treasury museum contains a collection of textiles and funeral regalia.

Uppsala Castle: The royal castle dates from the times Uppsala was the capital city of Sweden. Castle and Cathedral dominate the city skyline, especially beautiful when arriving to Uppsala over the motorway. The main banket hall is used every year to celebrate the newly awarded PhDs.

Carolina Rediviva: The university library building "on top of the town". It's permanent display includes the Codex Argenteus or Silver Bible, a 4th century translation into the Gothic language.

Botanical Garden:in front of the castle. It belongs to the university which also maintains two smaller botanical gardens: the
Linnaean Garden and Linnaeus Hammarby, the former summer home of Carolus Linnaeus and his family. See also the opening hours to the garden and its orangery and green house.

Gamla Uppsala

Gamla Uppsala
, or Old Uppsala, is situated 10 km North of Uppsala. From pre-historic times until the middle ages, the Thing (general assembly) of All Swedes was held here. Besides the royal mounds and the old church, there is also the Disagården (Disa farm) open air musem.


Stockholm

Is situated a 40 minutes train ride south of Uppsala.

Vasa Museum: Displays a 17th century warship that was recovered in the 1960s from Stockholm's harbour after a maiden voyage of just 1,300 m in calm weather.

Skansen is the world's first open-air museum, founded in 1891. It includes a small zoo.

Nordic Museum: Next to Skansen and the Vasa museum. It is dedicated to the cultural history and ethnography of Sweden.

Stadshuset: The City Hall (1923) is the venue for the annual Nobel Prize dinner.


Nationalmuseum: The National Museum of Fine Arts is located in its present building since 1866. It has a beautiful collection of paintings, sculptures and porcelain including works by the Swedish painter Carl Larsson famous from pictures of his family and home.
