Description

Scope:

We invite bachelor, master and PhD students to participate in a mini-workshop on frontiers of photonics and sources of extreme light. The workshop embraces three activities: (i) oral talks from senior specialists in photonics and light generation, (ii) students' posters and elevator speeches; and (iii)  a round-table discussion on research career development from the student perspective. An example of the previous workshop can be found here

All participants will have an opportunity to present their research work during the poster session. For that, please submit an abstract (see Registration & Abstract Submission). Interesting presentations on all topics of physics are welcome. English is a preferable language though Ukrainian and Russian are also acceptable.  Note that the abstract and presentation are not compulsory, and you can join as a listener.

All participants are invited to give a 5-minute elevator speech, which implies an explantion of your research work in the plain language. Four strong presentations will be rewarded with small presents.

Important changes: you are welcome to present one slide during your elevator speach. This slide can be the same as your poster.

Solar cells based on cu2znsns4/n-si heterojunction 10m
The semiconducting compound Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) is made up earth-abundant, low-cost and non-toxic elements, which make it an ideal candidate to replace Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) and CdTe solar cells which face material scarcity and toxicity issues. In addition, as an important compound thin film absorber material, CZTS exhibits superior optical and electronic properties, as well as a suitable band gap (approx. 1.5 eV). It is well known that CZTS has a great light absorption coefficient of more than 104 cm−1 in the visible light region, and its theoretical power conversion efficiency (PCE) is more than 30%.

Energy spectrum and effective susceptibility of a spherical quantum dot with a shell 10m
Quantum mechanical and electodynamical approaches were combined to describe electrical and optical characteristics of a nanoparticle. Open and closed quantum dots were considered. Influence of shell parameters was proved. Energy surfaces were built for both types of systems. Field self-processes lead to some shifts of energy levels similar to the Lamb shift effect.

Fluorescence-based temperature control for dynamics of microwave heating procedures 10m
The method of dynamic thermometry, based on the temperature dependence of some parameters of the fluorescence spectrum, is used to control the heating of liquid media in a microwave oven. The solution of organic dye rhodamine 6G is used as a temperature-sensitive sensor. Traditional intensity-based fluorescence thermometry of liquids, operates in a limited temperature range. To extend the range to the boiling point, temperature dependences of other parameters of the fluorescence spectrum were measured. For an aqueous solution of R6G the peak wavelength and asymmetry coefficient are equally convenient parameters. For a glycerin solution, it is preferable to measure the peak wavelength. Measurements of the solutions temperature when heated in a microwave oven showed high accuracy and reproducibility of the temperature-time profiles. The described technique has the potential to study in depth the dynamic temperature changes under microwave irradiation and can be used to register fast processes, control the spatial distribution of temperature and identify possible anomalies confirming the existence of specific and non-thermal effects of microwaves.

Development of precision information-measuring complex for optical metrology of nanosystems 10m
Goniometer Г5 is a precise laboratory instrument for measurement of angles between plane polished faces of optical parts, as well as for some other types of measurements. Its accuracy is 5 angular seconds. This device is very common in the post-Soviet space and is used in the optical industry and in scientific research. It is a convenient base for the creation of experimental installations to measure angular distributions of light. The main difficulty lies in visual reading angles on a specific scale and in manual positioning of the sample. The authors developed a complex of automation for this goniometer. The complex includes a machine vision system, drives for positioning and special modules for controlling polarizers or other optical elements. The machine vision system physically consists of a camera and a computer. The camera is attached to the goniometer goggle. The image of the scale is being processed by a program created by the authors in the LabVIEW environment. The main essence of the algorithm is to determine the fractional and the integral part of the angle. The former is achieved by analyzing the distribution of brightness along the specified segments, and the latter by the standard algorithm of optical character recognition. The scale reading error is about 2.5 arc seconds, which means full use of instrument accuracy. It takes generally about 1 second to determine one angle. Mechanical actuators are made on the basis of stepper motors NEMA8 and NEMA23. The motors rotate goniometer table and alidade through gearboxes and belt transmissions. The elasticity and unevenness of the transmissions are not fundamental because the real position of the elements of the goniometer is determined by its scale. These actuators allow you to position the table and the alidade with a few arc seconds of discretion. Finally, standardized nozzle fittings for goniometer tubes were developed. Each such nozzle is a turntable unit with a stepper motor and an optical encoder. It is used to position polarizers and phase plates with ~0.5 degrees accuracy. At each stage of automation, a large number of control programs have been created in LabVIEW. In addition, each new research task required the creation of new programs for the experiment and the processing of results. The described installation can be quickly reconstructed to the desired task. It can measure angular radiation distributions of sources or scattered light, work as an ellipsometer or Stokes polarimeter. The authors successfully conducted a series of studies on it, among which were the measurement of the indicatrix of scattering of milk glass, suspension of nanoparticles, ellipsometry of thin film multilayered structures, measurement of curves of plasmon resonance of biosensors, and others.

New approach for describing optical properties of nanocomposite thin films 10m
During the report I'll tell about the theoretical approach based on effective susceptibility concept for calculation of optical properties of nanocomposite thin films with metallic nanoinclusions. The issue of plasmonic resonances in nanocomposite thin films will be discussed. The dependence of absorption spectrum on morphology of films will be demonstrated. The possibility of configurational resonances will be shown. The problems of nanocomposite thin films optimization will be considered.

Surface plasmon resonance in “monolayer of ni nanoparticles/dielectric spacer/au (ni) film” nanostructure: tuning by variation of spacer thickness 10m
The dual surface plasmon resonance in Ni nanoparticles in “monolayer of Ni NPs/shellac film/Au (Ni) film” planar nanostructures has been observed in UV-Vis absorption spectra. The dependences of the intensity, wavelength, and width of the dual SPR absorption peaks of Ni NPs coupled with an Au (Ni) film on the spacer thickness have been studied in the range of spacer thicknesses of 12–43 nm. The main features of these dependences are an increase of the intensity, the blue shift, and the monotonic behavior of the widths of SPR absorption peaks at a decrease of the spacer thickness. The observed dependences have been rationalized as a result of the plasmonic coupling of the monolayer of Ni NPs with the metal film and the variation of the dielectric permittivity of the environment of Ni NPs caused by the metal film presence. The stronger dependences of the SPR spectral characteristics of Ni NPs have been observed in the nanostructure containing the gold film comparing to that with a nickel one. Such effect is due to the stronger coupling of Ni NPs with an Au film, and the stronger influence of an Au film on the permittivity of the environment of Ni NPs.
