Description

In this presentation we will review the function of dipole and quadrupole magnets in particle accelerators, and some of the key parameters in magnet design. We will discuss shortly the difference of using NbTi, Nb3Sn, or REBCO conductor in the winding cables. Quench protection is one of the considerations that one should take into account when designing the magnet. It means that if the conductor locally loses the superconducting state, and the large operation current starts to heat it resistively, the protection system must be able to switch off the system and safely discharge the magnet current. We will review how the magnet protection has been accounted in the early conceptual magnet design studies for FCC h-h and for a recent Muon collider study.
